The hilt of this sword was inspired by an original found hidden inside a wall in a medieval-era home in Linz, Austria, dated from the early to mid 14th century. The original sword is pictured as XIIIa.5 in Ewart Oakeshott's Records of the Medieval Sword. To make it even more of a classic XIIIa warsword, Albion has added a rivet block and lengthened the grip. The grip has eight planes and 2 risers in the middle as a support for the hand. Mounted in a hilt with a long grip like this, the blade becomes very agile and quick, yet capable of delivering devastating cutting blows.

The Albion Steward Medieval War Sword features a sharpened high carbon steel blade heat-treated to a fine temper in the Albion Forge Shop. The grip is of stabilized birch, wrapped with cord and covered with the highest grade vegetable-tanned calfskin. The guard and pommel are solid steel.

Steward War Sword – Powerful yet nimble This is my second Albion sword, and I am very pleased with the purchase. At first, this sword seems “nothing special”. However, after wielding in one’s hands, you start to appreciate the good design of this sword. The hilt is a hexagon/rectangular shape, which gives a very comfortable grip. I notice that I naturally use a semi-katana-semi-hammer grip, which I think should allow users to perform well in cutting. The blade has a long fuller and round tip, which accurately fits into type XIIIa blade. I was able to hold briefly on another Albion sword “the Duke”, which is similar to this one but a bit longer. The Steward definitely feels lighter and easier for a small guy like me. I am sure Duke is also a excellent sword, but Steward seems to be better and easier to use for myself. (This agrees with many pros on the forum that “there is no best sword, but a suitable one for each person in different situations.”) I got the red grip sword, and it looks very eye-catching since there aren’t many highlights on the sword design. In summary, I give this sword 5/5 stars!
