The Sovereign, with its characteristically broad blade and tapered tip, short grip and bold cross guard identifies it as a popular sword type from the period of 1275 – 1340. Compact and powerful, the wide fuller reduces blade weight whilst retaining good stiffness in the tip for a purposeful thrust. Its relatively short length brings good balance to the sword, making it quick and responsive – the wide blade brings power to the strike when it connects. A sword like this would be very effective in sword and buckler fighting as seen in the I:33 manuscript, dated to around 1300.

The steel cross is wide with crisply sculpted bevels and a slight cusp in the middle. The deep pommel is of the wheel type with a recess in the central boss. In this an owner could affix an enamel disc with his personal coat of arms or some other signifying mark or symbol. Sometimes recessed pommels were used as religious reliquaries on swords of outstanding importance.

The Sovereign has a hand ground high carbon steel blade is tempered for flexibility and edge retention. The crossguard and pommel are cast from mild steel. The grip is stabilized birch wood, cord-wrapped and fitted over with tight leather.

Some customers like to place period coins, religious symbols or heraldry markers inside the pommel recess. The dimension of the recess are: width: 0.79″, depth: 0.122″. The sword grip comes in a selection of colors, please select an option below.

  1. Terry

Awesome type lV Studying the different Oakshot blade types, I must say the type lV is one of my favorites…short, with a lot of blade presents…and Albion knocked it out of the park with the Sovereign. Sharp, Fast, light, & stunningly beautiful. The double fuller with the red leather really stands out & commands attention..as of fit & Finnish, it is typical Albion…Perfect !
