Darksword Excalibur Recently I received my Darksword Excalibur limited edition sword, #275/500, and I have to say that it is gorgeous! This is my first real sword other than a middle-of-the road katana from years ago. Darksword’s Excalibur is a real work of art! In summary: the sword came nicely packaged in a sturdy box, well protected with bubble-wrap. There was a moment of patriotic pride when I saw the “Made in Canada” sticker! There was a parchment certificate which stated the item name and number…a nice touch. I opted for the interlaced wooden/leather sheath: good quality and it fits the blade well. The sword itself arrived sharpened as requested: sword sharp not razor sharp, which I have learned is the proper way to edge your blade. The fullers are full and symmetrical and the blade has the nice ring of good quality steel. The manufacturers’ Darksword Griffin mark is stamped close to the guard and adds a certain elegance. The peened , wheel pommel and cruciform guard are brass and free from scratches. The grip is wooden with a stainless steel wire wrap. All fixtures are tight. There is a slight discolouration on one section of the wire but that’s okay…it confirms that this is a hand-made piece. It is surprisingly heavy in the hands but balanced and handles well. I would suggest wearing gloves as your hands will blacken due to the wire grip. I would recommend this piece for any collector or HEMA/sparring/cutting. Though I would be reluctant to hit it against anything, it’s a tough sword and can easily take the abuse, I just don’t want to dirty or scratch it! With its gold and silver-like appearance it epitomizes the knight errant : a great visual for any re-enactments or theatre. Eyal Azerad and his smiths have made a fine sword!
