This sword is based on the surviving hilt of an 9th or 10th Century Viking sword found on Scotlands Isle of Eigg. The blade does not seem to have survived, but the hilt of bronze remains in very good condition.

This reproduction, like the original, has an ornately detailed hilt crafted from bronze. The blade is forged from high carbon steel; the tang is anchored into the lower section of a two-part pommel with a pommel cap secured with two rivets. Twisted copper wire inlaid into the pommel complete it. Two part hilts such as this are more historical than single-piece pommels and few production pieces have this construction detail.

The sword is paired with a companion scabbard that is crafted from wood and bound in tightly stitched leather; intricate bronze fittings and a bronze suspension loop complete the scabbard.

Good swords were quite the commodity in the Viking world; superior quality steel was often imported and the creation of a sword with steel that can flex, yet keep a keen edge required a level of skill beyond simpler spears and axes. In general, swords were the prestige of a chief and his retainers, as well as nobles, champions and wealthier landowners.

The sword found on the Isle of Eigg takes adornment and craftsmanship a step further than many swords of the time and was likely the weapon of a chieftain or a considerably wealthy Viking. Such a level of craftsmanship came at great cost and ensured that its bearer would stand out in both wealth and martial skill.

really nice looking sword. heavy but well made. Im giving 4 stars just because I found that blade was not enough wide for my tastes.
