Symbolically revered for it dogged ability to swim upstream and up waterfalls, the Koi fish symbolizes perseverance, courage and the attainment of lofty goals. Ancient Chinese myth states that Koi which climbed the falls on the Yellow River at the Dragon Gate would become great dragons. If caught, the brave Koi fish will not flinch as it is cut with a knife from this in particular the Samurai found inspirational courage against the blades of the foes they themselves would face. A samura also desired the courage of the koi if he had to commit the ritual suicide of Seppuku, so that he would likewise not flinch against the blade slicing the abdomen.

This Wakizashi, from Hanwei, features the koi and its waters prominently on its Tsuba. The blade is hand-forged from T10 high carbon steel and its white-steel hamon is evident of its differential heat-treatment. The handle is covered in blackened rayskin, and its Tsuka-ito covering is of premium Japanese white cotton. Two gold dragon menuki lie beneath the ito wrap. The tsuka fittings are pinned in place with traditional bamboo mekugi, their removal allows for maintenance disassembly and customization. The Saya is finished in black lacquer with a quality striped cotton sageo scabbard cord. The sword comes with a navy blue cloth sword bag and a wood-boxed traditional maintenance kit.

    1. Liam

Tsuka is very comfortable. Ito is nice and tight. No rattle in saya and draws nicely. Blade is very sharp and holds an edge. Steel have not bent or chipped and is resistant to corrosion. Length, weight and balance are very good.
