This Rondel Dagger has a high carbon steel blade with a triangular-cross section. Its characteristic rondels are of steel and the spiralled grip is of carved wood. The dagger comes with a sheath of brown leather with steel fittings and an integrated steel belt hook.

This Rondel Dagger with its spiralled wooden grip and simple rondels appears to have been inspired by an example kept within the collection of the Royal Armoury at Leeds. The long blade with a triangular cross-section belies the function of the Rondel dagger – to deliver deep stab wounds.

Rondels are typically associated with the medieval Knightly warring class, for the long, narrow tipped dagger would have made a mockery of chainmail and its form allows it to be inserted between the gaps of plate armor with relative ease. Many well-armored knights met their end on the ground to a rondel dagger inserted into the armpit, neck or through the eye slits of their helms.

The Rondel Dagger seems to have first been used around the beginning of the 14th century and despite being associated with the professional warrior class, the dagger is illustrated as being worn by merchants and other decently well-off commoners. Though its use against armored opponents is emphasized, anyone could recognize that such a dagger can make truly harrowing stab wounds. Stab wounds are typically more fatal and cause greater damage than slash wounds and the triangular shape of the wound caused by a Rondel such as this only aided in making the wound far more difficult to stitch and treat should the unfortunate have actually lived long enough to see a healer or surgeon. These truths were a well-acquainted reality to the people of the medieval period.

It’s ok. Pretty historical look and feel to it, with exception of the goofy looking belt clip.
The triangular blade is very stiff and absolutely dead straight, but somewhat out of alignment with the grip (blade doesn’t seem to emerge from the centre of the rondel guard). This seems intentional though, and doesn’t affect the use of the dagger so i don’t mind.

From my tests, it’ll work well on gambesons. I accidentally hit a hard target during testing and it caused the tip to roll and deform severely. This makes me think that the blade is not heat treated or that the temper is very soft. The tip was very, very easy to file back into shape, which further confirms my suspicions.

Other issues: The dagger has a nut construction rather than peened as stated in the item description, and there was pitting on the blade (should really be in the dent and scratch section IMO)

A bit disappointing, but at least it’s fairly cheap.
